The effects of income shocks on female headship and poverty in Brazil

This paper analyzes the effects of income shocks on households’ chances becoming headed by women and its female-headed poverty vulnerability in Brazilian metropolitan regions. For that, unemployment rate was used as an shock, considering both positive negative variations general economy sectors that mostly employ men women. The results suggest decrease female household headship, while ones cannot always increase them Also, make households more likely to be poor.
